Year 6 (2019)

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Summary: The infrastructure and major construction projects complete, 2019 saw the continuation of the beautification project, the creation of the tree line nursery, the replacement of the East fence, and a reconfiguration of the rear tank bank and trellis field. A new web site was created to share information with our friends and fellow gardeners.

Chicago Hardy Figs 081819

This two-year old tree produced about 3 gallons of fruit this season!

Northeast Patio Nursery 081819

The New Treeline Nursery 081819

Serving as a convenient over-wintering bed for an ever-increasing selection of plants, the new tree line nursery provides a low-stress repository that supplies an ample inventory throughout the year. Although not completely frost-proof, losses have been minimal, at least so far.

East Fence Replacement 111719

Shown before replacement (above left), the old wooden fence has seen better days. After years of patching it up, it was time to tear it down. We decided to replace the old fence with chain link. We were surprised to discover that chain link isn’t what it used to be; the poles are now a smaller diameter and few (if any) king posts are installed (above right).

The New Fence

Instead of purchasing plastic “privacy” slats, we chose a sun-resistant cover instead. Inexpensive and easy into install, this cover handles wind loads well and is expected to last for years.

Chain link is not cheap, but it’s expected to outlast wood by many years, and the job was completed in a single day!

Rebuilding the Rear Tank Bank 121519

The Rear Tank Bank (Gen-2120.)

This last project of the year proved to be a real challenge!

Background: We use two tank banks to collect and distribute rainwater; one tank bank (2,000 gallons) is located at the front of the property and the other (5,500 gallons) is located at the rear.
